What an answer engine is
A search engine returns a list of links and lets the reader choose. An answer engine returns the answer. AI assistants, the AI overviews at the top of search results, and voice assistants in cars and kitchens all behave this way. They read many pages, pick the passages that answer the question most clearly, and present them, sometimes with a link to the source and sometimes without.
For a local business this changes what a page needs to do. Someone asking an assistant whether a chiropractor can treat a pinched nerve, or what a plumber charges to come out after hours, gets an answer pulled from whichever page explained it best. If that is your page, you are in the conversation. If not, you are not.
How AEO works
The first rule is to answer the question in the first lines. A page titled with the question people ask, followed by a paragraph that defines the term, says who it is for and what it does, gives the engine something it can quote whole. Burying the answer under a story about the practice does not.
The second is to support the answer with facts a reader can check: what the service involves, who it suits, what it costs if you publish prices, how long it takes. Short sections with scannable headings help both the machine and the person who lands on the page.
The third is markup. FAQPage and Article structured data tell the engine which text is a question, which is the answer and when the page was updated. Markup does not rescue a vague page, but it helps a clear one get read. Your service pages and your Google Business Profile both feed the same engines.
When it is worth the effort
It is worth it when your customers research before they book. Dental implants, med spa treatments, physical therapy for a specific injury, estate planning, a furnace replacement. These come with questions, and the business that answers them plainly is the one the engine quotes.
It matters less for pure emergency demand, where the searcher wants the nearest open business and the map listing does most of the work. Even then, a page that says what happens on an emergency visit, and how to book one, is the page an assistant will read aloud.
Common mistakes
Writing for the engine instead of the person. Pages stuffed with the question repeated ten times read badly and get skipped. Hedging the answer so much that nothing can be quoted. And claiming results you cannot show; engines increasingly weigh whether a page is trustworthy, and so do readers.
The other mistake is building the answer page with no way to act. If the engine sends someone to you, the page should let them call, fill a form or book right there. An answer without a next step is a courtesy to a competitor.
How Ottimo handles it
Ottimo’s website builder gives each service, problem and town its own page, written so the answer is at the top and the booking is on the page. FAQ sections are emitted as structured data without extra work. The website assistant answers the same approved questions in chat, so the person who arrived from an assistant can keep asking.
The same list of approved answers runs the AI phone agent, so a question answered on the page is answered the same way on the phone. Clinical, legal and coverage questions are handed to a person in both places.
