Ottimo or Clio?

Clio runs the matter, the time entry and the bill. Ottimo gets the call answered after hours and the consult booked. Here is how they line up for a firm, and where they hand off.

What Clio is

Clio is legal practice management software. It organizes matters, contacts, documents, calendars and tasks, tracks time and bills clients, and offers trust accounting and a client portal. A companion intake product handles new-client intake, e-signatures and a legal CRM. It is built to run the work of a firm once a matter is open, and to bring intake into the same system.

Ottimo fits when

A firm in personal injury, family, estate planning, immigration or criminal defense that wants more consultations from search and ads: a page for every practice area and county, calls answered after hours and booked, intake forms finished before the consult, follow-up and reviews on one record.

Clio fits when

A firm whose main need is matter management, time tracking, billing and trust accounting, with intake and e-signature inside the same system.

Three differences that matter.

Before the matter opens

Clio starts when there is a client and a matter. Ottimo works earlier: the search for a divorce lawyer in your county, the page that answers it, the call at 9 p.m., the consult request that gets a text within seconds, the intake form finished before the meeting. See law firms.

Calls after hours

An arrest or an accident does not happen during office hours. The AI phone agent answers, asks the logistics you approved, books the next consult opening or rings the attorney on call. It gives no legal advice and quotes only the fees you publish.

Pages for practice areas and counties

A firm homepage lists the partners. People search for a practice area in a place. An Ottimo site has a page for each practice area and each county you serve, with an intake form and a way to book the consult on the page.

What moving looks like.

  • Keep Clio for matters, time and billing. Ottimo hands off a booked consult and the intake form; tell us how you want the record to land.
  • Export contacts and leads from your intake tool. We import them and confirm the fields with you.
  • Decide who the agent rings first for urgent calls, such as an arrest or a hearing tomorrow.
  • Live in about five business days on the platform plan.

Questions people ask

Does the phone agent give legal advice?

No. It answers logistics only: practice areas, hours, how a consult works and published fees. Anything that sounds like advice or a case assessment is handed to a person with a note on the record.

Do we need Ottimo if we use Clio’s intake tools?

If intake inside your practice management system is enough, maybe not. Ottimo adds the parts that make the phone ring and get it answered: practice-area pages, ads, the Business Profile, the phone agent and the follow-up. See law firms.

How is client confidentiality handled?

Ask us how recordings and summaries are stored and what agreements are in place. We answer in writing before you go live. The agent collects only the logistics you approve and does not discuss the facts of a case.

Is this comparison up to date?

It reflects publicly available information as of October 2026. Products change often. Clio’s own site is the source of truth for its features, plans and pricing; if something here is out of date, tell us and we will fix it.
